Believing is Seeing
(Observations on the Mysteries of Photography)

Page 56
"And then there is the separate issue of posing. Posing is not necessarily deception. Deception is deception. The existence of two versions of "The Valley of the Shadow of Death" is a powerful piece of evidence that points away from the claim that Fenton tried to deceive his audience."
Believing is Seeing, Errol Morris

Wow, I'm not fully awake. This is a pretty heavy Friday 56. Will reread it.

Wow, that one boggles the mind. If photography is deception, then so is fiction, I guess.

Sounds like an intriguing book.

Nice 56!
I think posing looks like posing. It is always better to catch someone in their natural state or off-guard.
Thanks for participating!

i have a lot to learn about the mystery of photography for sure. i can say i am not a fan of posing and like natural photos. of if they are posed like the one on your sidebar, it looks like it is not.

I agree this is a deep quote from what must be a very interesting book.
Mom decided to turn to page 56 in Webster's Collegiate Thesaurus to just see what the first word would be. MOL it is audacity

Happy Weekend to you all,

I like natural. Posing is often stiff and mannequin like.

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around the difference between seeing is believing and believing is seeing!!! Is your favorite love poem Annabel Lee? It is ours, too!!!! So gorgeous. He sure could have used some Prozac, but I suppose that would have destroyed his creativity...

I prefer unstaged, natural photos to posed photos.
Have a wonderful weekend!
