Bee Fly on Cranesbill

The Bee Fly (Bombylius major), family Bombyliidae, is a fly that mimics a bee. Being a fly it of course does not have a stinger and it is quite shy. Usually they are seen around flowers. You may have seen one and thought it was just another bee. To learn more about Bee Flies go HERE.

Gak, an imposter fly!!!! But I must admit, just when I think you cannot impress me any more, you do it again! This is really a stunning picture, the intense blue and the bright yellow fur on the fly. I just never!!! I read the link, and though they are flies, they eat nectar, gads!! I have never seen such a thing and If I did I would run a mile. So with just one picture you have given me beauty while grossing me out, and taught me something amazing!!!! Way to GO!!!

That is a splendid photo - the colours so bright and true. I don't believe I have ever seen a bee fly though I think they're widespread in my part of the world. I shall look out for them now:-)

I've not seen one of these before. However, it nice to see a fly that instead of being a pest - actually works as as hard as a busy bee. Cool!

I'm another one who never heard of bee-flies. The link didn't say anything about distribution. I don't know if there are any around here. I'm not sure what I'd do if I saw one in my house.
"Excuse me, are you a fly or a bee?"
"Bzzzz."
"Are you a wasp or a hornet?"
"Bzzzz."
"Are you a bee fly? May I take a picture of you to send to Judy?"
