My questions for you today are loosely related to a current news story but we won't go into that particular subject. Let's think about our part in the judicial system. I have been called for and served on juries in four of the five states where I have lived. I have sat on civil and criminal trial juries and one time on a Grand Jury.
1) Have you ever been called for jury duty? Or, have you served on a jury?
2) If yes, what did you think about the experience?

we have no jury system in the Philippines. only the judge hears the cases and the one who writes the decisions. our judicial system is not perfect and there is still much room for reform and improvement. but i think the jury system may not be suitable in our culture.
I thought the first comment was very interesting!
In England and Wales we have the trial by jury system for everything that is considered a serious crime whether be civil or criminal. Minor criminal cases are heard without a jury unless the defendent asks for one.
I've never as yet been called to serve on a jury!
called yes. chosen for a panel yes. chose for jury, no.
Love the lamp
i was called one time for jury duty and was chosen to be on the jury.
i actually enjoyed it but it was only 1 day, i would not like to be on one that went on for weeks and hope never to be called for one of those.
mine was easy, he was so guilty we all voted guilty the first time and had no discussion. we were in court for 4 hours and he sent us to lunch. we had to stay in the back room, when we sat down, my big mouth said, i don't know how you all feel, but the man is totally guilty and i will not be changing my mind, every one in the rooms said YES we called the baliff and said we don't need to wait until after lunch we are ready, the judge was still on the bench he called us back in and we were done. it was aggravated assault and everyone involved in it the accused and accusers were all guilty.
I was on a jury only once, although I've been called for several I was always dismissed during selection. The one I was one I had to decide if a man was guilty of rape or not. The accuser was mean and nasty and was obviously looking to punish this guy for not liking her. Only one juror felt he might be guilty but we were able to convince him. The trial lasted two days, one for the evidence and one for us to deliberate. It was a good experience.
I haven't done any jury duty (yet) but I would welcome the experience. :)
I was summoned, but not picked.
I think that too many people are in court :)
Don't get me started!!! When I was little, one my favorite games to play was "Perry Mason". Sadly, I was always out voted by the others, And I never get got be Della Street or Perry. I always had to be the detective. Anyway, through my whole youth, I wanted to be on a jury so bad! I LOVE the lawyer T.V. shows. Sadly, I started getting ordered to court after my health was too bad to sit all day, so each time, I give them a doctor's note. But Phil was summoned to Federal court last week. He drove quite a long way to the court, only to find out the man had taken a plea. The accused was a big deal around here. He was a federal prosecutor who was accused of bribery and jury tampering.
To date, I've been summoned at least twice that I can recall. I haven't actually served, though, because of our homeschool schedule. Although, many feel it's a priviledge to be on jury duty, I wouldn't want the job. I don't believe its something I'd enjoy.

Ahhh you opened a can of worms today.
1. I rec'd my very first summons and served the week of my 30th B-day. I must admit I was excited. Lo and behold I get there only to find the 1st week of January is when 9 new Grand Jurors are selected. There were ~60 folks with summons that week. The judge came into the waiting room. Put all of our cards in his hand like a deck of cards. Then pulle out 9 cards. One being mine. He took us into a separate room to explain the Grand Jury process and point blank told us the only way we could get out of it was to have a terninal illness or move to another country. Wake Co. Grand Jury met every other Monday for 1 YEAR!!
2. As I said I was 30, married and had a child and considered myself a mature adult, but the things we saw and heard during that year were gut wrenching, horrible and jerked me right out of my comfortable life. I had no idea anyone could do those horrible things to another human being.
3. 3 months after getting off Wake Co. Grand Jury I rec'd a summons for U.S. Eastern District Court. There was travel involved with this service. The judge spoke to all of us one at a time about why we thought we could not serve. There were 2 pregnant women before me he let off. I knew there was no way he'd excuse me. When he got to me I told him I had just been released from Wake Co. Grand Jury. He said Ma'am I thank you for your service to the judical system and your time. You are released and probably will not be called again for a long time.
That was 31 years ago. I've only had one summons since then and was not selected. LOL I'll probably get a jury summons in today's mail

I've been called to Jury Duty many times but never been made to serve. It's not that I wouldn't want to, but it was always at a time I couldn't...
A. Was in college in another city when I was called to serve in my home town.
B. Was in college in another state when I was called to serve in my home town.
C. They called me the week I was supposed to (and did) get married. So glad I got out of that one!
D. Had just had a baby and was the only person who could take care of him because I was nursing and he wasn't bottle trained yet.
I wish they had called me when I was home for the summer from college say, when I was working nights at a job I hated before we had kids, or when I was substitute teaching and not tied down to anything.
Oh, funny related story: my Japanese roommate in college who had dual citizenship (born here while her parents were working here, but raised in Japan) but spoke hardly any English got called for Jury Duty. I remember her handing me the letter to me confused as to what to do. She got out of it though. :-)
1) Yes, many times. But never officially sat on a jury. They always seemed to be able to decide on their jurors before they get to me.
2) For me, it seems like a waste of time. Because I usually show up for a few days and then get sent home.
I will second Luna Miranda's because we hail from the same patch of earth. That is for the country, but personally i would love that, as i consider myself very objective and not easily shuttered by emotions. Maybe i am a good jury. Nonetheless, i love your lamp, very well shot and very artistic.
I start Jury duty in two weeks. Although I've been called several times, I've never actually sat on a Jury.
No. I've not been summoned to sit on a jury as yet.
Not sure how I'd feel. I wouldn't want to make such a heavy decision.
I have not served on a jury but have been called many times. I'm not good in separating my emotion in the case.
