Photo courtesy of The University of Alaska Fairbanks, Barrow Sea Ice Web cam. You can click on the link or on the photo to visit the web cam.Today the sun will rise in Barrow, Alaska and then set. That will be the last sunrise of the year for this far north village. The residents of Barrow will not see the sun again until January 24, 2011. On that day sunrise will be at 1:04pm and the sun will set at 2:13pm.
If you look over on my sidebar you will see the current weather for Barrow. Right now their temperatures are not that much different than what we are expecting for this weekend. They do have a lot more snow. Watch my sidebar in the weeks to come and notice the temps.
In past posts I have told you about the time I spent working at Camp Ukpiksuu (pictured above, my photo) on the Arctic Slope twenty miles south of Barrow, Alaska. The camp was set up for local children to give them a taste of life on the tundra as well as a regular summer camp experience. I was hired to teach nature and arts & crafts. After camp I had the opportunity to spend a day and night in Barrow before flying back to Anchorage. I met a lot of wonderful people and came away with really great memories of the experience.Be sure to visit the Barrow Sea Ice web cam, the site has more information and links that you might find interesting.

Hello, up there. Thank you for sharing the marvelous photos and will check out the web cam . . . now following you on Twitter. :)
I can't even begin to imagine living there. Looks like an amazing place to visit before the darkness sets in! Will be checking the webcam out.
Hi from the Saturday Blog Hop....anyone called Squirrel Queen gets my vote. I think this is an absolutely fab blog. I've just become your latest follower. I'm off to visit your other blog too and am following on Twitter as well.....wow what a stalker I am.
Wow..just looking at the photos my bones already chilled. No more sunrise for a few months? I can't live there, Judy!
Wow! You know, I love the night and the cold, but I don't think I could handle that. Really strong people must live there and kudos to you for giving those children a glimpse of Elsewhere. Checking out the webcam...
Brrrrrr...
What a great experience you had
Oh, Judy, I could not imagine without sunlight until next year.
It must have been a wonderful experience teaching there.
Oh, my, how stark and desolate. What fascinating information! I would think there may be a higher rate of depression there?
I adore your header with the the golden water!!
People working there full-time must be very stalwart souls. It is surely very hard to live in a twilight world for so long, with only artificial light to brighten the long, dark days. Brrr!!
Brrrrr---that does look COLD, Judy.... Did you enjoy your time in Alaska? Would you move back there if you could????
As much as I love snow---that would be too much for me... I just want a few nice snows in a winter... SO--I guess I'm living in the right place...
Thanks for sharing.
Hugs,
Betsy
Hi J and Miss Cindi Lou.
Mom loves the Barrow webcam. She looks at it and several others in Alaska nearly everyday. Mom has a friend who works a the U AK, Geophysics Lab and often does field work in Barrow....We also like the Daily News-Miner Webcam in Fairbanks.
Hugs and Happy Saturday,
madi and mom
Just looking at the picture makes me cold... I cannot imagine - especially since I live in So. California - I have to drive to the mountains for snow and there isn't that much there..lol
Great picture!
Love to you

Oh wow.
you sure found a place i do not want to be, this is the total opposite of Flordia. I would not do well there because sunshine makes me happy, and when it is dark i get depressed. and all that COLD yikes. I wonder if this is the same in the Yukon where Krista is.
Brrrrrrrr..that's way too cold, and gloomy!
nice blog, please visit my blog too..thanks
No thank you! I like it a bit warmer and brighter.
I guess I would have a tough time if loss of daylight is my november issue. Where's the midnight sun scene at this time of year???
Man that first photo looks absolutely FREEZING! I was just sitting here thinking that I was getting cold, and I'm in ARIZONA! LOL!
That must have been an adventure to be up there!
Morning Ms J and Miss Cindi Lou!!
We love your header.
Madi was delighted to read your suggestion about the yarn jar. She is eagerly awaiting the time when I leave just a hint of yarn sitting out of the top.
Today is my last day of work for the week. We're celebrating T-giving tomorrow night with my parents and daughter and son in law. They will spend T-giving Day with his family.
What are you all doing?
Happy Thanksgiving,
Hugs Madi and Mom
Did you see Sarah Palian camping there?
Yes. I think winter can be both cold and dark. I like the photos you posted. It really strengthens the title.
I am going to check out the link...I love things about Alaska...I would love to be there one winter. That alone tells you I am a little insane because I get so tired of the dreary days here. I do wonder how I would react to absolutely no sun.
Sounds much too dark and cold for me, but I guess someone has to live there. They may actually prefer it.
Oh my goodness ~ I guess I should quit complaining about winter in Saskatchewan Canada! LOL!
xo Catherine
Great to hear about you. I want to hear more...How special it must have been for you and the kids.
