Perhaps it has more to do with coloration than with the stripes - I notice, in the dictionary, that there is a tiger cat (a marsupial) that is spotted. Nonetheless, these photos are fantastic and why not call it Lily Leopard, or Lily the leapard, tho I am sure Lily fanciers would have something to say about that!
Good question..perhaps the person entitled to name this lilly just didn't know his big cats and got confused or maybe something about this lilly made them think of the big teeth a tiger has...who knows, but we cat lovers know our tigers from our leopards, don't we! Beautiful pictures...too bad there is no smell on computers!!
Oh, my, this is wonderful!!!! My eyes are laughing!!! You've outdone yourself yet again!! The spots look like they're jumping right off the petals. And your observation anout stripes and spots is right on the mark! Why didn't anyone ever ask that?
Fantastic macros Judy. Of course, the lilies are beautiful but this photo quality is a treat. A little sunlight always makes wonders with photos. Thanks for the lovely share.
I saw these today at Minter Gardens. I took a few photos of them for another day, but the ones I saw were also yellow and pink. I always thought they just came in orange. Your photos are gorgeous!!

Grew up in a small Georgia town with a desire to see some of the places I had read about and many I had not. I moved to Alaska and lived there for about ten years. My jobs took me to many parts of the state including Barrow, Nome, Kodiak Island and many more. I have also lived in California, Oregon and now Washington state.
Let this be the story of the journey so far.

Hmmmm... well now you have me thinking... why do they call it a Tiger Lily rather then a Leopard Lily? That's funny.

ABSOLUTELY a thought to ponder.
That is the thing with English there is always an exception to the rule.
However, I must admit that no matter it's name this is one pretty
(not a) tiger lily.
Happy Sunday,
Madi and Mom
Gorgeous tiger lily photos!
Okay from now on let's start calling them Leopard Lily for a change LOL!
Oh, I love that title...and beautiful photos of a beautiful flower.
Wow, simply breathtakingly beautiful!
We both picked the same flower this week! When I was working on posting it my wife commented on how "tigers don't have spots". Too funny.
Definitely one of our favorite lilies in our yard...
Great picture, Judy.
Hugs,
Betsy

AMAZING details. I love the freckles on the lily petals.
Gorgeous photos! This is my Absolute most favorite flower but I cannot grow them! If it's easy, I kill themm if it's difficult, they thrive.

AN OLD RUSTED LANTERN is my macro shot today. I hope you can find time to stop by for a visit. Have a great Monday.
It's a good question! It is orange and black but you're right about the spots and leopards! It's rather lovely, whatever the reason.
How can you not photograph a tiger lilly...they are such a stunning show of color. Great shot!
Such an amazing beauty!
Have a great week.
You have a point there.
Beautiful flower.
I agree, I don't understand how some things get their names, but it sure is a beauty of a lily!!!

Beautiful Tiger Lily. They always make me think of my grandmother. She always had tons of them in her yard.
Beautiful shot of the Tiger Lily.
great photos...but you are right about the lack of stripes.
Beautiful pictures. Lilies like this are some of my very favorite flowers. I have always wondered about the name too.
