It was New Year's Eve and we had snow followed by freezing rain that afternoon. After the snow and before the rain I had walked out on the patio when I saw the hawk flying overhead.
He landed in the top of the tree, paused for a few seconds and continued his flight.

These are not the best of photos because for some reason I rarely see the hawks on bright sunny days. See that big evergreen tree, the hawk land on the top branches of that tree. My zoom lens was maxed out to get the shot. The top two photos have been slightly cropped to give you a better view.

Top shot is pretty good considering the light etc. Thanks for sharing.
I like the first shot of the hawk too!
Hey Girl! Beautiful Shots!!
A question...Which blog will you be putting your Brenda Photo Challenge on? I need to correct your comment so when people click on your name, it will take us straight to the blog that has the photos...Happy day Girl!hughugs
Just yesterday, Saturday, I was on a raptor field trip and we caught and banded a red-tailed hawk, like the ones in your pictures. I'll post pictures today!
superbe loved the last tree with leaves so low!!! stunning fotografy
Wow, great shots!!!! Oh the serendipity of being at the right place at the right moment!
Gorgeous hawk!!
I could not have a hawk yet, I have a hawk-moth instead.
The last time I saw a hawk was last New Year's eve while I was jogging, so sad that I forgot to bring my camera along. Judy I will practice taking photos of birds, like the one you have posted.

Great captures, especially from that distance! I really love the one wihere he's coming in for a landing.
I LOVE these shots. Hawks are so amazing.
What awesome captures of this hawk in flight ... no matter WHAT the weather! Thanks for sharing with us.
Hugs and blessings,

What a capture!
I do the same as you - max out the lense.
I think it's terrific what you got - his spread out wings. Pretty cool!
Carletta’s Captures.
I'm amazed at how awesome these shots are.
Great picture, Judy... I rarely get any of my birds IN flight. You captured a great shot of the hawk...
Hugs,
Betsy
Judy what an amazing picture of that glorious hawk...Does Miss Cindi Lou take Heartgard? Madi is indoor only but her vet recommends it because of all the mosquitoes we have in NC...you know abou that being from GA. She started it last summer. She does not pill well so thankfully it is soft and can be crushed in her food which she gladly eats HA!!
My purse: thank you I love that purse too. I ordered it 3 years ago from ebags.com. It is a Bagganilli as soon as it arrived I tried to order a 2nd one but they were out and as of this date have not made it again. I get compliments on it daily. I wrote to the company to tell them how popular it was....no response. If I ever see it again I'll order several. I love vibrant colors. thank you for noticing.
Raining in Dixie but that is ok we're in for the day.

The first picture is really amazing, birds in flight are hard to capture. Great job!
Sunny :)
What a great find!! We see hawks flying around the interstate, but of course there's no way to snap them. He must have stayed in the tree for awhile to allow you to get your camera. Looks like maybe a red tailed? Great post!!
wow what a catch
Thank you for this treat! I so have to make trip to the mountains! I haven't seen a better photo of a hawk!
Super photos.
wow..hawk in action! Beautiful Judy!
Great shots of the hawk in motion. I took a photo of a hawk yesterday...but it was sitting on wires bove the highway. I like yours way better!
Hawks are so beautiful. I miss living in the country where I used to see them a lot! And once in a while, a bald eagle!!!!
Wow, love the great spread of its wings!
Those are pretty cool shots. I love the one with the wings spread wide open!
I think your photos are fabulous! What a treat!
Oh I love hawks! I love raptors of all kinds, one of the things I miss about moving into the city after living for a bit rurally is the wildlife right outside my door. One of the most incredible sights of my life was when a group of California Condors (I know they are scavengers and not raptors) but they came down to scavenge upon a dead jack rabbit in the road right in front of me and they were so awesome. They are endangered so I felt very honored by their presence and I pulled over to the side of the road and just watched them for a long time, wishing I had my camera!

I love the top picture - wonderful.
You got pretty good detail with your zoom maxed out. Any time you can get a hawk is a good time. I've only seen two this year, but with no chance of getting a picture.
Those are gorgeous photos. How in the world did you capture the moment? Action shots are hard to find.
Oh yeah, those are great shots. The first photo is my favourite, though a little bit blur, I can still see the fine lines. I still like it considering that it is very difficult to photograph flying birds. Well done Judy.
Sorry I am so slow with commenting these past 2 days, I had 2 night shifts.
when old man hawk come flying around our house all our little birds go into hiding. with the grayness of the day the photo came out very good. our park not far from our house has mr and mrs hawk and sometimes baby hawks. we love to watch them glide
Those are beautiful pictures. The hawks are awesome, don't sell yourself short.
Thanks for sharing the beauty.
The pics are great. How often can we actually see a hawk?
What a great way to end the year! Fabulous captures!
As usual, I'm behind in making the rounds to all the blogs. Hope you have a good time off; don't work too hard! =)
Awesome! I loved the one with his wings in full spread...I think they turned out spectacular!
I love your photos. Pictures ARE worth a thousand words!
The first shot is amazing, the beautiful pattern on the hawk's open wings came out wonderful. These photos are a great reward for going out in that weather.
We have lots of raptors by us too. I just love to watch them. They are always too fast for me to capture on camera. Good job! Much LOVE!
Don't forget the Great Backyard Bird Count on February 12-15th.
I just love birds.
