I really like this butterfly. It's interesting how similar all butterflies look. But then when you look very closely you can see small differences. Like this swallowtail with its extended back end.
How beautiful! I haven't seen that kind of butterfly yet and haven't heard about swallowtail butterfly, all I know is that's a butterfly! Thanks for the information, Judy.
It was a blast to the brain this morning when I saw this picture! What a morning wake up! This is totally amazing! Truly stunning! I don't think I've ever seen a butterfly like this one! How do you do this? Did you have your camera with you when you saw it?
That's a good shot, Judy. I have some butterfly pictures from this summer, but none of them were willing to pose like this. I didn't realize the swallowtails are mostly black and white, either.
B U Ti Ful Butterfly. I love the giant swallowtails, we have many of them in our yard. did you know they roost at night and almost always go to the same bush? i have gotten several shots by watching the bush. i noticed they came at the same time in the evening and googled it. they pick the bush and sit there at night, their wings fold up while they roost. we have 6 different kind in our yard because they love flowers and because about 6 blocks away there is a lady who sells butterflies to weddings and parties. some of ours must be escapees
I used to have so many swallowtail butterflies around my house, but, these days only rarely do we see them. This one is gorgeous with such perfect wings. Beautiful capture.
What a beautiful butterfly. Years ago wooden purses were popular. My husband bought one for me hand drew and painted many different butterflies on it. Then put a finish over it. I still have it...so pretty. I see you were born in Georgia So. girl at heart. I too love Alaska. My hubby and I went to Alaska in May 2005 in celebration of our 35th anniversary. It was a life long dream of mine. I admire you for following your dreams!!! Madi and Mom

Grew up in a small Georgia town with a desire to see some of the places I had read about and many I had not. I moved to Alaska and lived there for about ten years. My jobs took me to many parts of the state including Barrow, Nome, Kodiak Island and many more. I have also lived in California, Oregon and now Washington state.
Let this be the story of the journey so far.

How do you manage to catch them with their wings open....very clever.

Neat photo. We're twins this week. My butterfly looks similar though much darker.

That's beautiful, and a great photo, too! We don't have those butterflies around here. We do have a native swallowtail, but sadly I've never seen one.
You must have the patience of a saint to capture butterflies like this beauty, Judy. They move to fast for me and then I give up.
Just gorgeous. I love the little dots of blue and red on the bottom of the wings.
Breathtaking! Don't let Cindy Lou see this. :-)
So pretty! I just love butterflies!
Very pretty and brings back memories of warmer days! Yay!
One of my favourite butterflies! Nice to see one in December even if it's a photo and not in person.
